There’s something about Google Plus

Posted on 29. Jul, 2011 by Sandy in All things Social

That I find strange/odd/bizarre.

I can’t quite put my finger on it so thought maybe you could help.

For some  reason, when someone I don’t know follows me on Twitter, I don’t think much of it. I reason that

a) I said something that was interesting

b) They auto-follow based on keywords

c) I was suggested to them

Which is fine. I actively participate on Twitter so it’s normal. And if someone puts me in a public list, I can see it.

Now on Google +, I haven’t done much more than put up a profile pic and the occasional comment, mainly about how I don’t know what do to there and have only shared it with my existing circles.

Yet, I keep getting circled. By men.

Apart from the people I know that have added me to circles, I keep getting ‘circled’ by random men. And yes, if you look closely there is a fake Hugh Jackman that has been making the rounds..or circles.

I’m kind of curious to know what they are circling me in?

Person who hasn’t said anything but may eventually say something interesting?

Is it really true that there are ‘no girls on Google Plus‘ as indicated by a recent Forbes article? Or do women just not go around circling random people? Mashable has even gone so far as to call it a “sausagefest”.

Perhaps men are quicker to make the land-grab while us women observe and wait to see if it’s really worth spending our time on?

I think Google + is that grey area between Facebook and Twitter, which we’re all trying to figure out.

I did come across something I liked about it recently. The ability to share links to public discussions such as this one, which isn’t something you can do on Facebook unless you’re already friends or like the same page where the discussion is happening. So maybe there is a place for Google + in all this.

Are you on Google+? What has your experience been so far?

You make if sound as if being circled my men (on Google+) is a bad thing ;-) I think it’s totally random. You’re right, stats say that there are more men, but that’s not unusual, was same for Twitter and Foursquare, I believe.

I like G+ but haven’t really got into the rhythm of it fully. At this point, I’m still enthused about it’s potential. I’m looking forward to diving into it more.

The biggest problem I have is the the mobile experience is very poor, and I do most of my SM interactions on my iPad.

Thanks for linking to that discussion. People kept saying how Twitterish G+ was, this example helps demonstrate that.

Have a great weekend and watch out for roving circles of men!

    haha, you’re right! It’s not a bad thing ;)
I think I’m warming up to it day by day and will eventually figure it out.
I liked that discussion as well, I don’t find it as easy to follow conversation threads on Twitter.

    Thanks for stopping by!

HAHAHAA :) Now that I think about it, it is a bit of a sausage-fest, but so is Mashable. They have no room to talk.

I’m so picky about my circles because I’m tired of seeing the same people everywhere. So I don’t add people I already connect to elsewhere. That way, I have a real reason to use Google+ rather than just to say that I am.

It’s warming on me. I have to say that I am not being add randomly by men. I am being added a rapid pace by people (people I know) who sort of treat it like Twitter and they go and follow a whole bunch of people in hopes they will add them back.

But no random strange men. lol

I guess the sausage-fest is the tech scene in general, but that is slowly changing, too.

That’s actually a good strategy. Right now in my case it’s the same people on Twitter and it feels like the same conversations being repeated everywhere.

    Thanks for the comment!

    Dear Sandy,
I agree with you concerning “I think Google + is that grey area between Facebook and Twitter, which we’re all trying to figure out.”
I hate Facebook and I like Twitter, thaht’s the reason why, regardless of my opinion, I think that Google+ is a good alternative between the 2 olders Social Media.
I just instal a plugin which allow you to insert twitter feeds into google +.
    Since, I don’t use Twitter.

    Best Regards
